CANARIE connects Canada to the world. Our programs equip researchers, students, and startups in Canada to excel on the global stage.


Together with our 13 provincial and territorial partners, we form Canada’s National Research and Education Network (NREN). This ultra-high-speed network connects Canada’s researchers, educators, and innovators to each other and to global data, technology, and colleagues.


To strengthen the security of Canada’s research and education sector, we collaborate with our partners in the NREN, government, academia, and the private sector to fund, implement, and support cybersecurity initiatives. We also provide identity management services to the academic community and boost Canada’s startups with cloud resources and expertise in emerging technologies.


Established in 1993, CANARIE is a non-profit corporation, with most of our funding provided by the Government of Canada.

The Position: Manager, NREN Cybersecurity Services


The Manager, NREN Cybersecurity Services will be primarily focused on the National Cybersecurity Assessment (NCA) service and accountable for the management of the team and the development and delivery of the service. The responsibilities of this role may expand to include management of other services within the National Research and Education Network (NREN)’s portfolio of cybersecurity services.


This is a full-time, permanent position that reports to CANARIE’s Director, NREN Cybersecurity Services.


About the NREN


The NREN is an essential collective of infrastructure, tools, and people that bolsters Canadian leadership in research, education, and innovation. The portfolio of NREN Cybersecurity services currently includes the NCA service and a pilot of the Canadian Shared Security Operations Centre (CanSSOC).


Key Responsibilities


  • Develop and implement NREN cybersecurity service roadmaps, including defining comprehensive service requirements for internal and external desired outcomes, developing project charters, high level project plans, budgets, and schedules.
  • Manage and support the professional development of the NREN Cybersecurity Services team (internal and external team members).
  • Manage service development and delivery cycles.
  • Drive service evolution and identify areas for growth and continuous improvement, including new services offerings.
  • Define measures of service effectiveness, analyzing service delivery data, and implementing adjustments as necessary.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance cross-functional collaboration, ensuring efficient communication and synergy across departments.
  • Support and contribute to external working groups and advisory committees, as required.
  • Travel may occasionally be required.
  • Related duties and responsibilities, as required.

Bilingualism is preferred.


What You Bring


  • Education and Experience
  • College diploma or university degree or a suitable combination of education, experience, or other relevant training.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant progressive experience, including IT and/or cybersecurity service, program, or product management.
  • Experience in leading and managing multidisciplinary teams.


Skills


  • Demonstrated ability to build trust and credibility with both internal and external stakeholders, along with strong team building capabilities
  • Ability to facilitate and encourage collaboration among team members, leveraging diverse perspectives and skill sets to achieve common goals
  • Effective communication skills across all organizational levels
  • Understanding of cybersecurity risks specific to the academic sector
  • Data-driven with ability to assess outcomes and adjust plans accordingly


Technical Proficiencies


  • Strong working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite
  • Familiarity with NIST CSF and other cybersecurity frameworks
